Examinations

In order to be eligible for licensure as a funeral director you must pass the following exams:

  1. North Carolina State Board Laws and Rules Exam
  2. North Carolina State Board Exam for Arts
  3. North Carolina State Board Exam for Pathology

In order to be eligible for licensure as a funeral service licensee you must pass the following exams:

  1. North Carolina State Board Laws and Rules Exam
  2. Either the National Board Exams, or the North Carolina State Board Exam for Arts and the North Carolina State Board Exam for Science

In order to be eligible for licensure as an embalmer you must pass the following exams:

  1. North Carolina State Board Laws and Rules Exam
  2. Either the National Board Exam for Science, or the North Carolina State Board Exam for Science

Examination Procedure

Completed applications for licensure as a funeral service licensee, funeral director, or embalmer must be received prior to the exam registration.

A completed application consists of the following:

  • Application form submitted by the applicant
  • Certified school transcripts (received directly from the mortuary school)
  • Application fee
  • If out-of-state applicant: A written version of licensure, which must be submitted by another State Board of Examiners

Exam Registration

The North Carolina Laws and Rules Exam is administrated by Castle Worldwide. The National Board, North Carolina State Board, and North Carolina Pathology Exams are managed by the International Conference of Funeral Service Examining Boards.

Testing fees are paid directly to the test provider. Please contact the test provider with questions.
